10 Women Who Have Bossed 2017
Typing ‘Top Women of 2017’ into Google has left me feeling hollow inside. The first three results to spring up are entitled ‘Most beautiful women of 2017’. This is, in a word, bullshit. SRSLY have compiled a list of our top women of 2017, and *SPOILER* not one of these women are on the list for simply being fit.
We love Chrissy Teigs for a million reasons; her refreshing attitude to food as a model, her ability to style out a costume malfunction (think split dress, no knickers!), her openness regarding fertility problems. But it’s her reign over Twitter as the Queen of sass that has firmly planted her as a boss of 2017.
2. Gemma Collins
Gemma Collins memes have spammed our newsfeeds pretty much solidly for the last 5 months. Her ability to laugh at herself is a refreshing thing to see in the world of highly polished, media trained celebrity. She endorses body positivity, and is generally in it for the 'gals'.
3. Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox has been storming the ‘inspirational women’ category for a few years now, being the first transgender woman to receive an emmy nomination and an overall trailblazer for the LGBTQ community. Having starred in Beyonce’s Ivy Park campaign for Topshop this year, it’s safe to say that Laverne has absolutely killed it this year.
Of course, Rhianna has been fucking cool from the minute she left the womb. But the launch of her new cosmetics range Fenty Beauty has put her firmly on the map as a game changer. Offering 40 shades of foundation, FB has been applauded for its diversity, and in particular, giving more choice to women of colour. Nice one Rhi Rhi.
5. Ashley Graham
This stunner has been spreading body positivity for a while now, being the first plus size model to grace the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and Vogue. Encouraging women across the globe to love their curves and bringing more diversity to the world of fashion, Ashley was recently awarded model of the year.
6. Amber Rose
Amber Rose’s unapologetic and uncensored attitude to sex and gender politics has made her a driving force behind the women’s rights modern revolution. Dressing as ‘Captain Save A Hoe’ for the second ‘Amber Rose Slut Walk’, an event held to protest rape culture and slut shaming, has cemented her status as boss of 2017.
7. Serena Williams
Having won 27 grandslams, making her the most successful tennis player (note- female tennis player- just tennis player) in history, Serena Williams is already an absolute icon. But the fact that she won this year's Australian open whilst PREGNANT (without dropping a set) pretty much means she has won at 2017.
8. Emma Stone
Emma Stone has had a pretty good year this year. She has got to hang out with Ryan Gosling a lot, and what else? Oh yeah- won an Oscar. Starting off the year with an Academy Award is great, but her frank and open discussion about mental health and her own struggles with anxiety has won Em adoration off screen too.
9. Adwoa Aboah
Recently unveiled as the cover star for Edward Enninful’s first edition of British Vogue, Adwoa Aboah is hitting her stride as we draw to the end of 2017. Yet its her work as a feminist activist, setting up the discussion and advice platform ‘Gurls Talk’ that makes her a total goddess of 2017.
10. Cardi B
Cardi B made headlines in August as the first female solo rapper to hit the number one spot in the American charts since Lauryn Hill in 1998. Her ‘no fucks given’ attitude is refreshing, and makes her an incredible person to follow on insta-stories!
Of course, this is only a tiny selection of all the badass women out there, and we look forward to seeing what 2018 has in store- big things no doubt 👸👸🏽👸🏼👸🏾👸🏻👸🏿
