The Anti-Makeup Movement
There are millions of women out there doing all sorts of amazing things everyday. From giving birth to giving blood to giving badass speeches at the Golden Globes, it's just the usual. When it comes to makeup we think that it's just as impressive to put on your foundation on a shaky Tube while everyone is staring at you as it is to bare all and go completely natural.
In this post we're sharing women who are doing the latter every day of their lives. We thought we'd appreciate them, because in this day and age of Kylie lip kits and eyelash extensions it's pretty fucking brave. Starting with the more adamantly make-up free women to those that often share make up free photos of themselves - here we honour them all:
Alicia Keys quit make up back in 2016. She said in an essay in Lena Dunham's newsletter Lenny;
"Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me."
Alicia might still wear a tiny bit of makeup and or whatever TF she wants to wear but she just doesn't feel beholden to makeup anymore, and that is freaking brilliant.
Freelee the banana girl
Freelee is the banana-loving vegan who changed her name during a waterfast 11 years ago. She has described her new life of freedom in the following way:
'I spend most of my day nude; free of restrictive clothing. I feast mostly on organic fruits and vegetables picked from the land. I shower in monsoonal rains and drink from pristine creeks. I quit an unhealthy relationship and found peace. I haven't shaved my bodyhair, dyed my hair, or worn makeup in over 6 months.'
The inspiring Leandra Medine not only does not wear makeup but is the founder of Man Repeller, a fashion blog which offers a whole lot more than just fashion advice.
Actor and activist Shailene Woodley used to be in The OC and is still oh so slaying.
Actor, TV star and total babe in every way, Gemma left Hollyoaks to go to Hollyoaks in the city and more recently headed to Strictly Come Dancing where she evidently was covered in too much fake tan and hairspray to want to wear it IRL. Highly recommend her Insta for some good ol' PMA (positive mental attitude).
It says something when you post a no makeup selfie and don't even need to caption it that to let everyone know 🔥🔥🔥
Apparently Lupita's childhood home didn't allow makeup and her mother never wore any, so it's unsurprising Lupita doesn't feel the need to.
Letting us know that even legends can keep it real.
Laura Jane Williams
Laura or 'Superlativelylj' as her Insta handle nicknames her posts countless make up free selfies and also often demonstrates her desire to 'love the skin she's in' as she puts it in the caption of her post above. #yes #superlativelyyes
If you wear a fuck load of makeup, if you don't, if you only wear it on date night or you wear it to work everyday - you do whatever makes you feel like the badass bitch you are. But big up to the girls who are giving us some variety in the photoshopped filled world we live in 👏👏👏
